What does ransomware look like to an IT expert? Intermedia partner Kosh Solutions shares its thoughts on the threat
As part of our blog series about ransomware and its impact on businesses, we sat down with several Intermedia partners to get their thoughts. In this installment of the series, we talk with Koert Council, Partner at Kosh Solutions.
Read the first installment, “Ransomware 101”, the second installment, “Containing a ransomware attack”, and our partner interview with Felix Yanko of Technology & Beyond on our website. You can also read our report to learn more about ransomware and ways to restore encrypted files and get employees back to full productivity after an attack.
Recently, I talked with Koert Council, Parnter at Kosh Solutions, to get his impressions of the ransomware issue and how it’s impacting Kosh Solutions and their customers.
Q. How are your customers reacting to the threat of ransomware?
“We have probably picked up half a dozen or more new customers as a result of ransomware attacks, with one as recent as a month ago. We’ve seen fewer requests for help in this particular area among our current customer base because people know more about ransomware than they did a year ago, and because they probably have better antivirus and spam filtering in place. This heightened awareness has made businesses realize they are vulnerable and that they need to protect themselves. No business today can afford the potential loss of three or more days of revenue, which is what they can reasonably expect from a ransomware attack.”
Q. A lot of companies see paying the ransom as their only option. But it’s not really all that easy, is it?
“One of the biggest pain points following a ransomware attack isn’t the cost and the time it takes to pay the ransom—it’s the amount of time it takes many people to understand what Bitcoin is, how to buy it, and how to use it as a currency in order to pay the ransom. Now with SecuriSync’s new features, no one has to even think about this part of things. Clients can skip paying the ransom altogether.”
Q. How do you see SecuriSync’s new instant rollback and restore features impacting your customers?
“We’re excited by SecuriSync and already use the product a lot internally. One of the biggest customer queries we receive is related to our clients needing help with restoring a computer with a damaged, failed hard drive, or infected with ransomware. With these new SecuriSync features, getting our clients access to the documents they need after a computer is dropped or stolen will take just minutes—resulting in a great productivity increase for both us and our clients.”
