It’s World Backup Day! The perfect reason to review your backup strategy
Today is World Backup Day! And that makes it the perfect time to evaluate your backup strategy.
It’s something I think all businesses should examine. Given the almost-daily news reports of ransomware attacks and hacking, I think businesses should carefully evaluate their backup strategy and how it fits into their overall business continuity plan.
I thought I’d get an expert’s view of the situation, so I asked Jonathan Levine, CTO here at Intermedia, for his thoughts:
“Backup has become an increasingly important part of business continuity plans over the years. Traditional backup solutions, however, can present a problem because they don’t backup files in real time. This issue is even more critical with the emergence of ransomware that threatens to take entire businesses offline for extended periods of time. Any company that hasn’t incorporated off-site, real-time cloud backup with point in time recovery and instant file access into its continuity plans is likely to suffer significant downtime at a huge financial cost if targeted by such emerging malware. World Backup Day is an opportunity to educate businesses about the importance of backup and provide basic prevention and containment techniques to avoid downtime in the increasingly likely event that a ransomware attack occurs.”
To Jonathan’s point, cloud-based backup is only the first step to avoiding downtime due to a business interruption like a ransomware attack. The second piece of the puzzle the point-in-time recovery and instant file access. Because the goal of any business continuity plan is to help you get back up and running quickly when that interruption does strike your business. If it takes your IT team days or even weeks to bring your business back online and give workers access to their data, the cost of that downtime could be far worse than the cost of the initial interruption.
SecuriSync brings real-time backup and restore to enterprise-grade file collaboration
In looking at the file backup landscape, we realized there was an opportunity to bring businesses a cloud-based solution that would answer two distinct needs — backup with point-in-time recovery and robust file sharing and collaboration. Most businesses today use two separate services to meet these needs. But we felt that was unnecessary. With the right tool, you could satisfy both needs, all while providing users the features they want and IT admins the control they require. That tool is SecuriSync.
Check out this video that shows the file recovery feature in action:
If ransomware strikes and users get locked out of their files, they sit idle until your IT staff can restore that data. With SecuriSync, file restoration takes minutes rather than hours or days. So your users get back up to work quickly while IT tackles the malware infection itself.
Learn more about the threat of ransomware
We recently published our 2016 Crypto-Ransomware Report to dig deeper into the topic of ransomware and how it impacts businesses. We were surprised at how destructive this type of malware can be to businesses. Our research revealed that 72% of companies hit by ransomware where down for at least 2 days while IT restored their files, with 32% being down for 5 days or more.
You really can’t take this threat too seriously. And World Backup Day is the perfect time to really sit down and ask yourself if you business is truly prepared.
