How to stop spam, part III: Leverage your provider’s spam filters

In part 1 of our How to Stop Spam series, we gave you tips on how to stay under the spammers’ radar. In part 2, we talked about spoofing. Now, in our final installment, we will tackle spam filters. This one is simple—but it’s also often overlooked.

Let your provider’s spam filters do the work

Many email applications (such as Outlook or Thunderbird) offer spam-blocking filters. But as good as those filters are, they don’t come close to the effectiveness of the filters that your email provider can provide.

So our third recommendation is the most straightforward: let your provider block the spam for you.

By default, Intermedia’s spam filter is pre-enabled. But you should double-check that it’s in place. Here’s how:

  1.        Log into Outlook Web Access (OWA) by going to
  2.        Navigate to Options > Block or allow > Automatically filter junk email

After your server-level filter is place, it is time to disable filtering on your email application. Here’s how to do this:

Outlook for Windows
Navigate to Home > Junk > Junk E-mail Options  >  No Automatic Filtering

Outlook for OS X
Navigate to Home > Junk E-mail Protection > None
