How do you define reliable? We say 5-9s.

Business happens 24 hours a day. If your email is down or you can’t access your files, you can’t get work done.

That’s why so many companies are moving email and file storage to the cloud. Cloud service providers have the capacity build a cloud infrastructure that’s far more secure and reliable than what a company can build for itself.

So when a business IT service provider like Google Apps or Microsoft Office 365 offers you a 99.9% uptime guarantee, that could certainly sound like it’s reliable enough—that is, until you do the math.

Because over the course of a year, 99.9% uptime—or “three nines”, in industry terms—adds up to more than 8 hours of unplanned downtime. In fact, when a provider offers you 99.9% uptime, here’s what they’re also telling you: “You should imagine 2 days over the next year when your email or your files will be unavailable for 4-hour stretches at a time.”

Look for “five nines”

So when I talk with prospective customers, I recommend that they aim higher than three-nines. Intermedia’s cloud services, including Exchange Email and SecuriSync® file backup and share, are all backed by a 99.999% uptime SLA. (Here’s the legal paperwork to prove it.)

This equates to us saying that you should expect less than 10 minutes of downtime over the course of a year—and, if we should fail to deliver, we’ll compensate you for it.

Three nines vs. five nines: it’s a difference that may not seem significant in your decision-making process… until the day your email is down for four hours or your employees can’t collaborate on any files.
