Exchange 2007 end-of-life FAQ for Intermedia Partners

Q: Why do I have to upgrade my customers to Exchange 2013?

A:  Typically, after an Exchange platform has been around for about 10 years, Microsoft® will stop supporting it.  This means that they stop offering extended support to Intermedia, which is required to keep your customers’ services up and running.  But more importantly, it means they stop releasing critical security patches essential to protect your customers against viruses and hackers.  In order to prevent these scenarios, Intermedia is going to upgrade these customers to a newer platform.

Q: Can I choose not to migrate?

A:  Unfortunately, no.  Because Intermedia wants to provide the best experience for your customers, we want to migrate all customers off of the 2007 platform well before Microsoft stops supporting it.

Q: What will I need to do in preparation for the migration?

A: We are taking every step possible to help ensure the migration is seamless and without downtime.  However, there are a few things you should do to prepare your customers for this migration:

  • Upgrade their Outlook® – If your customer is using an older version of Outlook (2003 or older), you will need to verify they are using Outlook 2010 SP1. If they aren’t, please update their Outlook to this version.
  • Identify where their DNS records are hosted – If they don’t host their domain with Intermedia, you will need to know who to contact in order to make updates to their DNS records. We will be sending out emails over the next month to alert you which customers don’t have domains hosted with Intermedia.

Q: Where do I update their Outlook?

A: Upgrading is simple and easy to do via the Control Panel in the Partner Portal.

Q: What will the process for migration be like?

A: We are planning to handle as much as we can on the back end to help ensure the migration process is seamless for your customers.  Unfortunately we won’t be able to migrate all of your customers at the same time.  But we will send notifications about each account’s exact migration date, so you will know when it will take place.

Q:  How will the customer’s experience change with a newer version of Outlook and Exchange?

A:  It will change in a positive way.  There are a number of enhancements with the Exchange and Outlook upgrades.  Microsoft updated Exchange 2013 with mobility, collaboration and productivity enhancements including:

  • Simplified and cleaner user interface;
  • Redesigned OWA look and an optimized feel for touch screens;
  • Optimization for mobile devices;
  • Instant messaging integrated with Outlook and OWA;
  • And much more.

Q:  What about my customers other services like SharePoint®, Office Communications Server, etc.?

A: We will be migrating those services to the new platform as well.  Again, many services such as OCS will be upgraded to the newer, more feature rich versions.  As we get closer to the migration date, more information will be shared about how those services will be migrated and in most cases, upgraded.

Q: What about their pricing, will my monthly fees change?

A:  Your bill is like to change a little—but there will be no increases.  You may also be able to pass on some additional services and features to your customers as part of the upgrade for no additional charge.

Q: Who do I contact if I have additional questions?

A:  If you have any other questions prior, you can always contact your account manager at, 888.299.2522.
