Email Protection and Security Adds New Capabilities to Protect Clients from Compromised Mailboxes and Credentials
Intermedia has recently released some important new security features and enhancements to the Email Protection services we provide with Exchange and Office 365 email.
- A dangerous technique used by hackers is to compromise account credentials and then set a rule to forward all the account messages to the hacker’s mailbox. This often happens without the knowledge of the actual account owner and can be difficult to detect. Intermedia now automatically alerts the account owner when a suspicious forwarding rule is created for an Intermedia hosted Exchange account, specifically to forward messages to an external email account. If the external mailbox is unknown, it indicates the account has been compromised and the password should be changed immediately. - Users should never reuse the same password for different services because they are at risk if any of those services are compromised. The largest database of known breaches is available as a resource for validating whether credentials are known to have been compromised or “pwned” in a data breach. Intermedia checks this service when a user is setting or resetting a new password for Intermedia services and advises them to choose a different password if their proposed password appears to be previously compromised. - Message tagging is an important security and productivity feature included with Intermedia Email Protection for Exchange and Office 365. With this option enabled, emails that contain marketing, spam, phishing, are external, or have failed authentication, have tags added to the email subject and/or email body and are highlighted using different colors. Email recipients can understand more clearly what can be wrong with the specific email and why it can be harmful. Administrators can now customize the message tags, colors, and preview text with specific instructions, for example, based on your company’s security procedures. These capabilities are included with Intermedia services and with Intermedia Email Protection for Exchange and Office 365/Microsoft 365 plans from Intermedia.
